Drums represent the heartbeat of the Earth and
have been used in healing for thousands of years.
"Hanta Yo" means "clear the way". Clear away all
that is in the way so the Spirit, inspiration, and
creativity have a clear route of expression. This is
what drumming does, clearing away all the dross
and conditioned responses so that something from
deep inside can come out. The beat of the drum is
like a sweeping broom: the vibrating sound waves not
only enter the ears, clearing the thoughts and mind,
they also pierce through the congestions in the aura,
moving the air around the body, bringing in balance,
rhythm, and energy. This vibration cracks open the
shells of limiting thoughts and commotions, establishing
order and harmony. Our internal organs and tissues
love order and harmony, and love to be brought
into synchronicity and balance. Drumming does this by
clearing the way-Hanto Yo.
Of all the instruments/tools listed on this site, drumming
has been the most studied and reported on. Scientists
are now documenting the wisdom of the ancients. In a
groundbreaking study published by Barry Bittman, M.D.,
subjects were able to strengthen their immune systems on
a cellular level after one hour of group drumming. CNN
recently reported on companies that have on-site drum
circles for their employees. Those studies showed drumming
significantly reduced employee burnout and that workers
showed improved moods and morale after a brief series
of drumming sessions.
Drum Circles are popping up all over the place from
boardrooms to classrooms, parks to churches, rehab center
to cancer treatment centers-it probably won't take you long
to find a circle in your community. It's great family fun,
everyone from toddlers to seniors can participate, but whether
you choose to drum in a circle or solo drum, the drummer
can expect to experience health benefits for both mind and body.
